About the Artist
Steve Palmer has been working as an artist with a primary focus in glass since 1979. He began his study of glass blowing with Bob Toensing at ARCC and also completed the BFA program at the University of Minnesota with a focus in
sculpture. Steve is currently involved with the production of two main bodies of work - “Sculptural Vessels” and “The Watercolor Series.” |
Sculptural Vessels: These works are sculptural in nature and vessels in form. Steve employees a great variety of processes and techniques within this group of pieces. He includes blown glass, sand cast glass and molded glass parts in combination to provide the basic sculptural form and then delves into the surface with deeply sand carved relief and form altering details. Additionally, the pieces are chemically etched to produce a consistent satin surface.
The Watercolor Series: Steve treats these relatively simple vessel forms as a painter would treat a canvas. He creates abstract “paintings” with colored glasses, capturing them within the surface of the vessel, These pieces are all about color - The “Fire.”
Steve has accumulated many accolades for his work including awards at many top art fairs - Cherry Creek, Denver - Clayton, St. Louis - Plaza, Kansas City - Scottsdale Arts Festival, Scottsdale - and many others. He is included in many collections including the Minnesota History Museum Contemporary Crafts collection and the White House Collection, Washington DC.
